Discover Southport

Originally founded in 1792 as Smithville, Southport has evolved into a charming destination renowned for its Victorian-era seaside charm and relaxed atmosphere.

Southport owes its inception to Joshua Potts, who sought the establishment of a settlement adjacent to Fort Johnston. Named after a distinguished colonel in the Continental Army and former governor of North Carolina, Smithville thrived as a fishing village and played a vital role in supporting military activities. For nearly 170 years, it served as the county seat of Brunswick County, leaving an indelible mark on the region’s heritage.

In 1887, Smithville embraced a new identity, renaming itself Southport in hopes of becoming a prominent shipping port. Though the town didn’t achieve that specific goal, it found its own distinctive allure. The relaxed ambiance, coupled with the captivating Victorian architecture, embodies the essence of Southport’s appeal.
