Discover Oak Island Real Estate
Oak Island has a rich history dating back to the early 19th century when Fort Caswell was constructed on its east end in 1838. Since then, Oak Island has become a popular destination for both tourists and residents alike.
After the island’s slow development, it began attracting people from nearby Southport in the late 1930s for fox hunting. However, in 1954, Hurricane Hazel wreaked havoc on the island, leaving only five buildings standing on the west end. Fortunately, the island quickly recovered and the towns of Long Beach and Yaupon Beach were incorporated in 1955.
Due to its location on the intracoastal waterway, Oak Island offers easy access to boating and fishing opportunities. The original swing bridge was destroyed by a barge strike in 1971, and the resulting high-rise Barbee Bridge opened to traffic in 1975.
In 1999, the towns of Long Beach and Yaupon Beach consolidated into the Town of Oak Island, with Caswell Beach remaining independent. This consolidation brought together a diverse community, creating a unique atmosphere that is welcoming to all.
Today, Oak Island is easily accessible with the second high-rise bridge, Swain’s Cut Bridge, opening in 2010. The town boasts numerous amenities, including pristine beaches, championship golf courses, parks, and a thriving downtown area. With plenty of homes and properties available, now is the perfect time to make Oak Island your home.
