The History of Holden Beach

In 1756, Benjamin Holden bought several tracts of land on the mainland and the island for fishing and cattle grazing. Fast forward to 1924, and John Holden, Benjamin’s grandson, surveyed and developed the first beach property subdivision in Brunswick County, called Holden Beach Resort.

John built the Holden Beach bridge in 1925, which was destroyed by the Inland Waterway construction. He then negotiated with the state of North Carolina for a public ferry, which started operating in 1934. After John’s death, Luther S. Holden continued developing the island, and his son John F. built homes and started renting them to vacationers.

In 1954, Hurricane Hazel nearly destroyed the island, but it was slowly rebuilt. The town was incorporated in 1969, and in 1986 a new high-rise steel and concrete bridge was dedicated, providing better access to the island’s over 1,900 homes at the time.
