The County Seat

The town of Bolivia was established in the 1890s and incoroporated in 1911. While there are several versions of how the town received it’s name, the most prevanlent is that during the 1880s boxes of tar and trupentine moving through the town were stamped for their destination of Bolivia, South America. Locals like the name and adopted it for the town.

While nothing more than a crossroad between Myrtle Beach and Wilmington for some time, the town became the county seat in 1977. It’s now home to the Brunswick County courthouse and governement complex, as well as Brunswick County Community College.

With it’s convenient location near beaches and half way between Myrtle Beach and Wilmington, many neighborhoods have developed around Bolivia. From the sprawling golf course community of Winding River Plantation, to the sleepy fishing area of Sunset Harbor, there is something for everyone in the Bolivia area.
