Welcome to Bald Head Island.

From the moment you step off the ferry in the Bald Head Island marina, you’ll notice things are a bit different around here. Things move a little slower on this 12,000 acre island. With no cars and 10,000 acres of nature preserves, Bald Head Island feels a little like stepping back in time. From the 14 miles of beaches and Old Baldy to the shopping and private clubs, and everything in between, there is something for everyone on Bald Head Island.

Going back to the 17th and 18th centuries, Bald Head Island was a refuge for many pirates, among them Edward Teach, aka Blackbeard, and Stede Bonnet, known as the Gentleman Pirate. But a pirate hideaway wasn’t the only thing that Bald Head Island was historically used for.

Bald Head Island was home to the British Fort George during the American Revolution and again during the Civil War as Fort Holmes. Over the years, Bald Head Island has been home to three lighthouses, including the iconic Old Baldy, built in 1817.

Bald Head Island is full of amenities for residents and vacationers alike. It’s home to two private clubs The Bald Head Island Club with an 18 hole golf course, swimming, tennis, croquet and dining, and Shoals Club with amazing views of the beach, a salt water pool, dining options and kids activities.

With numerous shopping options throughout the island including The Shops at Maritime Way, the Island Retreat Spa and Salon, and plenty of dining options, there is something for everyone on Bald Head Island.

With 3 beaches and 14 miles of coastline, numerous creeks meandering through the island, and Bald Head Marina, being on the water is easy in Bald Head Island. And wildlife is plentiful – Bald Head has four habitats within the island: Dunes, Freshwater, Maritime Forest and Salt Marsh with multiple species of wildlife living throughout. It’s also an important sea turtle nesting area.

Bald Head Island hosts many outdoor events throughout the year, from multiple annual marathons and 5Ks to the monthly Howl at the Moon beach bash. There is always something to do here!
